[Eugene Roe was a very easy person not to notice, in almost every facet of his life. Small and slim, with a combination of black hair, dark grey eyes, and milk-white skin that gave him a monochromatic appearance, he wasn't all that physically striking and didn't do a lot to make up for that fact with his personality. In fact, anyone who did notice him would likely assume that he was working against any chance of making friends or being a social presence - he spent most of his free time at school in the library, or in the classrooms or labs of teachers who were particularly fond of the strange, quiet, deeply intelligent boy, working on extra credit projects or advanced placement rather than spending any time with peers.
Some teachers had worried that he must be getting bullied, but when they'd kept an eye on him in the hallways and on the school grounds, they'd all found the same thing: other students simply didn't see him there, and he did nothing to get their attention. The arrangement seemed perfectly symbiotic if not for the fact that it left most with the new worry that Eugene must be incredibly lonely.
His biology teacher was one of those who worried; since he showed such above and beyond skill in the class for someone his age and had always excelled in that area of sciences, his reputation among the staff had preceded his arrival in her class, and she'd taken to him just as fast as everyone had predicted. For a time that meant letting him work alone, but she just didn't feel like that was of any benefit to him anymore. At the very least, she wanted to try an experiment.
So for their first dissection of the year, Eugene Roe was paired with Kenny Al-Bahir. He moved to join Kenny at his table before the other boy would even have a chance to think of doing the opposite, setting his things down and giving Kenny an extremely subtle smile and nod.]
[Kenny hadn't really noticed Eugene Roe all that much but when it came to class Kenny did tend to keep to himself too -- especially if it was one of the classes that he didn't have with Larry. There was far more risk in trying to deal with anyone than there was in just keeping to himself and working hard to make the good grades that were expected of him from his parents.
He'd been nervous about the dissection and at first he hadn't thought people were going to have partners and they all had to do it alone but there was a rush of relief when the teacher announced partners. His eyes lighting up when luckily his partner wasn't one of the known bullies in the class -- even if he didn't know this guy well if he didn't that mean that he wasn't likely to just outright be mean to him or anything.
And as he came over quickly it seemed that it wasn't likely he had anything to worry about -- and if he remembered right this was the guy with the highest grade in the class. Lucky.]
Hi. [Kenny greeted him cheerfully, resting his chin on his hand as he studied his new lab partner. Kenny was anything but subtle.]
[The force of that steady, keen stare was more than a little unnerving to a boy who wasn't to very much attention at all; he averted his eyes quickly, twin streaks of high colour painting his cheekbones and even the tops of his ears, then managed to look back a bit more politely.]
Hi. I'm - [Introductions weren't really necessary, were they? He pursed his lips thoughtfully, then concentrated on clearing his expression enough to look, at least, unbothered by the slip.] - well, guess you heard, I'm Eugene Roe. Y'can call me Gene, though, if you prefer.
[His voice gives him away as not being a local, or at least not always having been a local, almost as soon as he opens his mouth; it's got a soft, lilting drawl that speaks to somewhere in the South, not as strong as when Eugene first arrived but still very pronounced. In fact, he's been in the school since the 9th grade, which led many people to assume he had simply come from a different junior high than they did when he had the brief visibility of a new kid.]
[Kenny didn't laugh but it was amusing, was the guy blushing? Had he done something to unsettle him? Well no matter.] Gene, Okay. That's cool. Classic name.
[The other's accent wasn't something he'd heard here before. He could start getting ready for the lab but instead he kept his attention on Eugene instead, curious and well he didn't seem annoyed that Kenny was talking to him. Which, a lot of people got annoyed if Kenny tried to talk to them.]
You don't talk like you're from here? Where are you from? How long have you been here? Why are you here? [It's probably too many questions at once.]
[Like Gene Kelly, he thought, then decided that probably wouldn't be any sort of reference Kenny knew. Which he was probably very wrong about, but Kenny really was one of a kind and took some time to figure out.
They had their notes to read over, make sure everything was done properly, but the truth was that Eugene had done a similar dissection already as one of his advanced placement tests. As the frogs and tools were being handed around the class, Eugene started to flip to the list of internal organs they'd need to identify, but looked up quite quickly at Kenny's flurry of questions.]
I - no, I'm from Louisiana. Been here 'bout three years now. Better chances for my popa to find work. [That was everything, right? He hadn't exactly answered in a chatty way, one which suggested they were having a friendly conversation, but he had answered it all. Right as he was trying to think of things to ask back, the dissecting pan, pins, scissors, gloves, and everything else they'd need were left at their table for them.]
Thank you, Ma'am. [Giving the teacher a polite nod, he turned back to Kenny.] Diagrams and lab questions are fourth page in the handout.
[Eventually Eugene would probably figure out that that was definitely a reference that Kenny would've known, even the one he was thinking about. He lifted a shoulder though because he saw the trays starting to get passed around.]
That's cool. I've never really left New York. [He offered, flipping to the fourth page and pressing his lips together a little. He really was not looking forward to this assignment the more real that it became.]
You ever done something like this before?
[Kenny stared at all the tools that would be used for the lab and tried not to think about it immediately after, looking elsewhere in the classroom -- a cat poster on the wall, perfect distraction.]
I ain't never left Louisiana 'til I came here. [He gave a little shrug in return, like that wasn't such a big deal. How much could people really travel in high school, anyway, unless their families were loaded and could bring them on vacations? That most certainly wasn't the case with his.
Kenny's reactions didn't escape his notice, and the slightly uneasy tone as he asked about it pretty much solidified his impression of how Kenny felt about dissecting animals. It wasn't everyone's thing.]
Yeah, I done the frog last year, actually. Want me to make the cuts and do the pinnin'? [He was smiling a little again, but it wasn't at all to tease Kenny; rather, he hoped to let him know that he didn't find anything "lame" about the discomfort, or think he was "chickening out," or any of the other dumb things guys their age often said.]
[Kenny had been around kids that went on all sorts of vacations and his own family had never quite been for it. Even Larry would talk about the crazy beach houses that his grandparents were in and the like.]
Really? [He perked up a little at the offer, feeling a little better at the idea of not having to mutilate a frog and then pin it open like some macabre show.]
... makes me sound weird if I say yes, don't it. [He pulled on his gloves and picked up the scissors, carefully eyeballing where he should make the first incision as he continued to speak.] I like knowin' how things work, 'specially livin' ones. No better way than seein' it firsthand.
[Once he had a line down the center of the frog's belly pictured in his head, he started his first incision with clinically detached efficiency, hands perfectly steady.]
They're not living anymore though.. [Kenny mumbled and when the other started cutting he looked away, feeling queasy at the sight. Not too mention the smell was getting worse too.]
[Eugene had some response about vivisection forming on the tip of his tongue, how parents would probably riot outside the schools, but then he glanced over at Kenny and realized that his objections didn't seem to be entirely whining.
(And Eugene hated the smell of formaldehyde as much as anyone else, so he could agree on that. It was not something to be enjoyed, ever.)]
[Kenny flushed at the question because it just made clear that he was totally not handling the whole dissection thing well even if Eugene was technically doing the work.]
Yeah. Totally fine. Just feel like breakfast might want to say hello. [He joked, but there was no way he was going to let himself throw up. He was already a laughing stock even if he ran out of the room to do it he'd never live it down.]
[For a joke, the words sounded pretty damn sincere. Eugene continued to watch him for a moment longer, the concerned furrow between his brows deepening, before he decided he was best off just continuing his work. He didn't want to make anyone sick, but if his new partner wouldn't pull himself off the dissection, what could Eugene do?]
If you say so. [The middle incision was complete, so now it was time to cut across the top of the frog's belly, pulling back the two inside corners and pinning them down to create a window through which they could see the frog's organs. One more cut across the bottom, with those two inside corners pinned, and they'd be ready to label.]
[Kenny bit down on his lip as he peeked again at what Eugene was doing it. The worst part he decided was the way the frog was pinned open and he felt sorry for the frog even though it was already dead, obviously.]
Do they kill them or wait for them to die naturally? [Not the best subject to distract himself from nausea.]
... sure you wanna be thinkin' about that right now?
[It definitely wasn't the best subject, and Eugene wasn't going to be the one responsible for making Kenny emotional as well as ill. He seemed like a very good person, open and friendly in a way Eugene didn't experience very often, but he was also all the wrong kinds of sensitive for this work.
Chewing on his lip with concentration, he carefully made the final cut, which was the most difficult to keep straight since the skin wasn't pulled as taut. Yet again, though, it came out almost immaculate, and he grinned to himself as he pinned the last two corners.]
I know you probably don't wanna look, but we could get a diagram of this on the exam. [To his credit, Eugene really did sound apologetic.]
[Kenny exhaled at that response which made him worry that they did indeed kill the frogs. Poor frogs... Everything about this was really sucking and he couldn't even appreciate the fact that he had a very cute, very smart lap partner with an interesting accent that on any other day would have made him sigh dreamily.]
Ugh... [Kenny groaned and tilted his head to peer at the, in his mind, murdered and now poor mutilated frog]
I can't. [He swallowed hard because the sight definitely made the nausea much worse.]
[That groan, which sounded like it had come right from the base of Kenny's throat, made Eugene look up from his handiwork nervously. Sure enough, Kenny now appeared to be doing worse, so much that Eugene was no longer sure if just taking him off the dissection would be enough.]
You need to see the nurse, Kenny? [This time, Eugene's voice was quiet enough to keep it just between them, his expression kindly concerned.] Ain't as bad as bein' sick in class, right?
[Kenny was staring down at the table and he flushed a bit at the question because no matter how you slice it everyone was going to know what was going on if he left. But was that worse than if he threw up in the middle of the classroom.]
Everyone will know. [He exhaled, trying to will the nausea away. It's not like he was cool to begin with but there was going to be a whole new thing to be teased about.]
There ain't no shame in this. It's just 'cause you're kind-hearted.
[That... was viewed as a point of shame with teenage boys, though, Eugene couldn't deny it. Still, he couldn't see that it would be at all wise to keep Kenny in a room where he'd be huffing formaldehyde and seeing carved up frogs everywhere he turned until the hour ended.]
If you're worried 'bout people talkin'... you can say it were somethin' else and I'll back you up. You don't look good, you gotta get outta these fumes and clear your head.
[Kenny couldn't rightly think of a good argument against what Eugene was saying because clearly he wasn't going to be able to stomach this. He bit down on his lip as he glanced at the teacher and then the door.]
My life is seriously the worst. [He exhaled, not even minding that it was far over dramatic.] I'll go to the nurse.
You'll survive, Kenny. [Eugene grinned and gave Kenny's shoulder a single, comforting pat before leading the way up to the teacher's desk. After a quick whispered conversation between them - because he least Eugene could do was ask her privately rather than shouting across the entire classroom - he nodded to Kenny to follow him from the classroom as well.]
[Kenny sighed because he wasn't quite as sure of his survival as Roe seemed to be. But he followed him all the same, trying to look nonchalant but as soon as the left the classroom he took a deep breath.]
I think the doctor thing my dad wants me to do is definitely not going to work.
Toby had met Kenny by absolute chance once, a couple years ago. He doesn't even remember the story anymore because other than the fact that it had brought this living piece of sunshine into his life, it was insignificant, random, mundane. Kenny was anything but those things, though. He just had this way about him and Toby knows he doesn't deserve this, someone so genuine and sweet should never be subjected to the trash heap that was Tobias Williams. But Toby is a selfish sort and now that he's found him, he doesn't intend on letting Kenny go. Not of his own design, anyway. If Kenny chose to leave, he wouldn't try to stop him. But until then...
Toby drops gracelessly down onto the couch, throwing his legs over Kenny's lap and laying back all too dramatically against the arm of the couch, his arm thrown across his eyes. "We've been in this apartment for far too long. I might wither away from the lack of social interaction." He was only partially serious--he is the epitome of a social butterfly and is rarely found alone in any capacity--and the joking manner was perfectly clear in his voice. He drops his arm and tips his head up, a grin on his face, "It's still the weekend. We could do something thrilling."
Kenny's arms dropped over the other's legs, his hand squeezing around one of his ankles as he looked over at him. Kenny was honestly used to the sticking to few locations, with few people. It's not that he was shy but most of his life he'd only ever had one friend and they'd lived right beside each other.
But Toby was different than that and Kenny had gotten used to his somewhat different whims. He definitely wouldn't change anything about them.
"Oh, I dunno. We could find something, I'm sure." He says, leaning carefully over the edge of the couch for the pack of cigarettes on the table. He lays back on the couch and lights one, pocketing the pack and lighter both, considering something for a moment.
"You always have ideas," Kenny murmurs, fingers drawing a light circle on his ankle as he watched him grabbing for the cigarettes. He doesn't much like the smell of them but it's one thing that he ignores because he likes Toby more than he doesn't like the smell of smoke.
"What? No, of course not."
He's never even really thought of going to a club.
"Usually," He nods once, blowing the smoke in a direction away from Kenny because he knows he hates the smoke. He doesn't complain about it, though, which is nice. But then, that's probably one of the most apt words to describe the younger boy, isn't it?
Toby snickers at the nearly shocked sound in that response. Like he'd asked something truly outlandish--like if he had ever considered streaking through the city during a parade. "Why not?"
"Well, I'm not really old enough," Kenny replied as if it was the thing that made the most sense in the world and underage people didn't get into them all the time. "That could get us both into a lot of trouble," he added. Toby clearly didn't mind trouble nearly as much but it's probably good that one of them had a radar about things that might be a little too high risk.
"So? That has never stopped people from getting in anyway." He shrugs a bit. He definitely has a penchant for trouble and Kenny's moral compass is probably good for him.
But he's not letting this stop him.
Toby grabs the ashtray and stubs out his cigarette before shifting to sit straddled across Kenny's lap, his forehead pressed against Kenny's. "We should go tonight. It'll be fun and I promise you won't get in trouble."
"Really?" Kenny asked. It's not like he had never heard of people with fake IDs but people that he knew didn't have fake IDs and do stuff like that, aside from maybe Toby apparently.
Kenny's eyes widened when the other straddled his lap, only briefly startled. He's gotten more used tot his sort of thing in his friendship with Toby. "You promise? Not any trouble at all?" he asked, a smile pulling easily at his lips and he can't clearly look at him when their faces are this close but he's okay with that.
"How?" Kenny questioned him because he's still not completely buying that there wasn't much of a risk of getting caught. He supposes that Toby's probably right. There's not a lot of ideas that they get into because of him that Kenny doesn't end up liking.
Like the other in his lap, close to him in a closeness that the teen savored.
He chuckles softly, not minding the questioning because it’s sort of just Kenny’s nature. He’s curious--and cautious to boot. Toby’s used to it by now. “I know the guy that runs the club we’re going to, he won’t say anything.” That wasn’t…exactly true, but they didn’t tend to check IDs if you came in the back door of the club, so it really wouldn’t be an issue either way.
“You trust me, right?” He asks, a teasing lilt to his voice, signaling he doesn’t actually thinking Kenny doesn’t trust him. Even if Toby has told him in the past he should find someone else, someone better.
Kenny looks doubtful for a moment but he really doesn't know much about how clubs work so he just has to trust Toby which when it comes down to it he does. So, at the question he nods, a smile spreading across his face easily again.
"Of course I do," Kenny assures needlessly, leaning to nuzzle his cheek with his own just because he could.
"Good," he mumbles, turning his head just a little so he can catch Kenny's lips against his own briefly. One day, he's pretty sure this one will get away from him because somehow, he'll fuck it up, so he enjoys the little things, the sweet things, while he's still his.
Later that night, they arrive at the club and, just as Toby had promised they got in without any trouble. This being the younger boy's first time at a club, Toby's watching him curiously. "What do you wanna do first?" He asks, leaning close to Kenny's ear so he can hear him over the music.
Steven had many friends at school, being his usual vibrantly boisterous self. He was fairly popular, despite being considered, well, odd. He would talk to anyone, and always insisted that everyone be treated well. Though these traits set him apart somewhat from his peers, they also endeared him to them. No one else seemed to match Steven's endless optimism and, call it what it was, love.
He'd never really considered Kenny all that much. Kenny was a year (or two?) ahead of him, and they shared no classes. But when Steven came across a sleeping Kenny in a common room, he was struck by how incredibly cute the scene was. Long after he had gone home, the image of the boy sleeping comfortably curled in a chair stuck with him. He didn't know the boy, but he decided he would. Steven was great at meeting people.
So, here we are, Steven is at school before classes begin, threading through knots of students and looking for Kenny, though he doesn't know it yet. He turns his head this way and that, looking for that short curly hair. And there, he spots the back of Kenny's head across the room. Steven makes his way over, rehearsing his name quietly as he does. He nears the boy, who's sitting by himself, apparently waiting for classes to begin. Steven plunks himself down across the table from him, and smiles widely.
Unlike Steven, Kenny didn't have a lot of friends. His one real friend was Larry and then he was sort of friends with the rest of the chess club that he was the president of. Though, he'd never quite lived down having his flag underwear run up the flag pole the day he got elected.
He's surprised then when Steven comes up to him and seems to be intentionally talking to him. That's a really rare thing after all. "Hi, I'm Kenny," he said brightly and even though he didn't have a lot of friends it didn't mean that he wasn't social and friendly himself.
He's about to tell the boy everything about the chair but stops short, remembering not everyone likes to hear that sort of thing. He's got to play it cool, be friends with him. Kenny. He knows his name, and now he gets to be friends with him! Steven does his best to curb his enthusiasm and keep the conversation going.
"I uh, just saw you waiting by yourself, and I was waiting by myself and thought we could wait by ourselves together!" No, Steven, too much, too cheesy, he's immediately doubting his words, an unusual occurrence for him. Well, whatever the words were, they were said, so all he could do was wait for Kenny's reply.
If Steven had, Kenny wouldn't have found it all that strange as it was something that he might have seen himself doing at some point or another. In any case, he definitely couldn't complain about anything that might bring him another friend. Larry was starting to be more and more obsessed with girls and the girlfriend thing and that was making their friendship less of a priority to him it felt like.
"Oh sure!" Kenny's eyes widened, though he already had rather large eyes really. "That'd be great," he said because why wait alone when you could have some company?
To Steven's complete surprise, Kenny accepts! He's super excited, and breaks into a wide grin.
"Great! So tell me about yourself, what grade are you, what're your favorite classes, what are you going to be when you grow up?" Slow down Steven, he reminds himself. He's going to have lots of time to get to know his new friend. He doesn't need to get to know him totally right this instant. But he wants to, that's for sure.
Kenny took in all the questions and he waited patiently for Steven to stop asking before before he tried to talk. His chin rested on his fist as he studied the other boy in a too intense way that he was apt to doing.
"11th, I like drama and English most. I don't know what i'm going to be when I grow up . What about you?"

Date: 2016-10-09 12:22 pm (UTC)Toby drops gracelessly down onto the couch, throwing his legs over Kenny's lap and laying back all too dramatically against the arm of the couch, his arm thrown across his eyes.

Date: 2016-10-10 10:44 am (UTC)But Toby was different than that and Kenny had gotten used to his somewhat different whims. He definitely wouldn't change anything about them.
"What are you thinking this time?"

Date: 2016-12-11 12:01 pm (UTC)"What? No, of course not."
He's never even really thought of going to a club.

Date: 2017-01-15 12:52 am (UTC)Toby snickers at the nearly shocked sound in that response. Like he'd asked something truly outlandish--like if he had ever considered streaking through the city during a parade. "Why not?"

Toby grabs the ashtray and stubs out his cigarette before shifting to sit straddled across Kenny's lap, his forehead pressed against Kenny's. "We should go tonight. It'll be fun and I promise you won't get in trouble."

Date: 2017-01-30 08:40 am (UTC)Kenny's eyes widened when the other straddled his lap, only briefly startled. He's gotten more used tot his sort of thing in his friendship with Toby. "You promise? Not any trouble at all?" he asked, a smile pulling easily at his lips and he can't clearly look at him when their faces are this close but he's okay with that.

Date: 2017-01-30 05:31 pm (UTC)He nods, "Promise." He assures him with a grin. "You'll love it." Or never want to go to another club as long as he lives. One of those.

Date: 2017-03-05 09:49 pm (UTC)“You trust me, right?” He asks, a teasing lilt to his voice, signaling he doesn’t actually thinking Kenny doesn’t trust him. Even if Toby has told him in the past he should find someone else, someone better.

Date: 2017-03-20 03:30 pm (UTC)"Of course I do," Kenny assures needlessly, leaning to nuzzle his cheek with his own just because he could.

Date: 2017-05-07 06:48 pm (UTC)Later that night, they arrive at the club and, just as Toby had promised they got in without any trouble. This being the younger boy's first time at a club, Toby's watching him curiously. "What do you wanna do first?" He asks, leaning close to Kenny's ear so he can hear him over the music.
20+14 high school au!!!!
Date: 2016-10-31 10:28 pm (UTC)He'd never really considered Kenny all that much.
"Hi, I'm Steven! What's your name?"

Date: 2016-11-01 06:01 am (UTC)He's surprised then when Steven comes up to him and seems to be intentionally talking to him. That's a really rare thing after all. "Hi, I'm Kenny," he said brightly and even though he didn't have a lot of friends it didn't mean that he wasn't social and friendly himself.

Date: 2016-11-02 11:09 pm (UTC)"I uh, just saw you waiting by yourself, and I was waiting by myself and thought we could wait by ourselves together!" No, Steven, too much, too cheesy, he's immediately doubting his words, an unusual occurrence for him. Well, whatever the words were, they were said, so all he could do was wait for Kenny's reply.

Date: 2016-11-05 09:14 pm (UTC)"Oh sure!" Kenny's eyes widened, though he already had rather large eyes really. "That'd be great," he said because why wait alone when you could have some company?

Date: 2016-11-05 09:37 pm (UTC)"Great!
